There were a number of surprise qualifiers for the Grand Slam of Darts in Coventry today, as Winmau trio Mark Webster, Mervyn King and Steve Beaton were the most high-profile names to secure qualification.

Beaton whitewashed Prakash Jiwa and Matt Clark 5-0 to seal qualification, whilst Mark Webster was an emphatic 5-1 victor over James Richardson in the final round of qualifying.

They will be joined in Wolverhampton by Wayne Jones, who beat Devon Petersen in the final round of qualifying, to secure a place in his hometown event.

Former BDO man Robbie Green, who reached the last 16 of last year’s Grand Slam, performed superbly well to qualify, thrashing both Andy Hamilton and Vincent van der Voort 5-1 to seal his spot.

Steve West beat St Helens’ Eddie Dootson 5-2 to qualify, having earlier beaten Wes Newton 5-1. Elsewhere, the ‘X-Factor’ Andy Boulton stunned former BDO World Champion Stephen Bunting 5-2 in the final round of qualification, to seal his Grand Slam debut.

The eighth and final qualifier, Jonny Clayton, will be the third Welsh representative in Wolverhampton, alongside Webster and BDO stalwart Martin Phillips. Clayton defeated Justin Pipe 5-4 in round two; before despatching the in-form Jelle Klaasen 5-2 in the final round of qualifying.

There were a number of high-profile casualties in Coventry. Ian White fell at the first-hurdle, losing 5-3 to Arron Monk. However, the World Number 8 may yet still qualify; as he’s one of 3 players on the ‘reserve list’ of qualifiers.

Jelle Klaasen and Terry Jenkins are the other two players nervously awaiting to see if they’ll make the cut. Klaasen lost out in the final round of qualifying, whilst Terry Jenkins lost a last-leg decider to the enigmatic Devon Petersen in the last 64.

Brendan Dolan, Simon Whitlock and Justin Pipe  face an uphill struggle to qualify. They will have to reach the final of the European Championships to secure a spot. Dolan was beaten in the opening round of qualifiers, losing 5-2 to Tomas Seyler.

Whitlock lost out in a nail-biting last-leg decider against a rejuvenated Andy Jenkins in the second round of qualification, whilst Justin Pipe lost at the same stage to Clayton, also in a deciding leg.

World Grand-Prix semi-finalist Mensur Suljovic lost out in the final round of qualifying, losing 5-1 to an inspired Mervyn King. The Austrian had only dropped one leg in beating Darren Webster, Dirk van Duijvenbode and John Henderson, but was unable to secure his Wolverhampton debut.

Former World-finalist Kevin Painter and Three-Time World Champion John Part are the other notable omissions from this year’s competition. ‘The Artist’  lost in the second round to eventual qualifier Wayne Jones, whilst John Part lost at the first-stage of qualification; going down 5-3 to Andy Hamilton.

The eight players beaten in the final round of qualification also played off for reserve places for the tournament, if required. Devon Petersen is the first reserve, Jelle Klaasen second reserve and Vincent van der Voort third reserve.
