Peter Wright secured victory in the first Players Championship event of 2016, as he defeated two-time world champion Adrian Lewis 6-5 on Saturday afternoon at the Barnsley Metrodome. Wright trailed 5-3 in the final, but won the final three legs to seal the £10,000 winner’s cheque and his eighth PDC ranking title in the process.

Snakebite eased through to round-two with an emphatic 6-0 whitewash against Ryan Palmer, before reaching the last 16 with 6-4 victories against Cristo Reyes and Keegan Brown respectively.

Peter secured his last eight spot with a deciding leg win against Joe Murnan, before recording 6-3 wins over both Ian White and Joe Cullen to reach the final. There he produced a fine comeback , to gain revenge for his Premier League defeat against Lewis last Thursday.

However, Lewis will take immense satisfaction from his performance on Saturday afternoon, where he dethroned both Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson en route to reaching the final.

Lewis overcame John Bowles, Ricky Williams and Jamie Lewis to reach the last 16, where he edged through in a last-leg shootout against the in-form Alan Norris. Lewis then defeated MvG in the quarters, before replicating these heroics against Anderson in the last four.

Joe Cullen backed up his run to the quarter-finals of last weekend’s UK Open with another fine display in Barnsley. Joe reached his first ever major PDC quarter-final in Minehead last week and he came agonisingly close to reaching his first PDC ranking final today; losing to Peter Wright in the last four.

‘The Rockstar’ kicked off proceedings with fine victories over Brett Claydon and Ronny Huybrechts. In round-three, Cullen recorded a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Premier League-star Michael Smith. The Yorkshireman then recorded successive 6-3 wins over Justin Pipe and Daryl Gurney, before losing to Wright by the same scoreline.

Gary Anderson also made a strong start to his 2016 Players Championship campaign by reaching the last four. Anderson eased into the last 16 with victories over Ryan Meikle, Dennis Smith and Jonathan Worsley; dropping just four legs in the process.

‘The Flying Scotsman’ prevailed in a pulsating last-leg decider against five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld, before storming into the semi-finals with a 6-0 drubbing of Gerwyn Price. Anderson faced Adrian Lewis in a repeat of last year’s World Championship final, although on this occasion, Lewis triumphed.

Michael van Gerwen’s incredible winning streak was also halted by Adrian Lewis in the quarter-finals. In the preceding round, MvG had dismantled Phil Taylor 6-2; his ninth victory against ‘The Power’ in their last ten meetings. Nevertheless, Jackpot produced a fine display to end Michael’s run of 27 consecutive wins.

It was a mixed day for the Dutch contingent in Barnsley. Along with Van Gerwen, Raymond van Barneveld also reached the fourth-round. Van Barneveld defeated his protege Jeffrey de Zwaan 6-1 in round one, before dispatching another of his compatriots, Jeffrey de Graaf in round-two.

Van Barneveld gained revenge for last week’s Premier League loss to James Wade by defeating ‘The Machine’ 6-3, but Barney’s run was eventually halted by world-champion Gary Anderson in the last 16.

Vincent van der Voort suffered a disappointing first-round exit to World-Youth finalist Nathan Aspinall, with the youngster prevailing 6-2. Jelle Klaasen was also beaten by an emerging talent, losing 6-3 to Belgium’s Dimitri van den Bergh in the second-round. Benito van de Pas went one better, before losing 6-5 to quarter-finalist Gerwyn Price.

Elsewhere, Robert Thornton’s woes continue, as he was beaten 6-4 by fellow veteran Andy Jenkins in the first-round. However, Thornton wasn’t the only big-name absentee to suffer defeat in the last 128; Simon Whitlock, Dave Chisnall and Mervyn King were beaten at the same stage, by Joe Murnan, Mark Barilli and Paul Nicholson respectively.

It was a fine day for Mark Barilli in Barnsley. After stunning Chisnall in the opening round, he came through a last-leg decider against Ron Meulenkamp, before edging out Aussie ace Kyle Anderson in round-three. However, his fairytale run was ended unceremoniously by Daryl Gurney, with the Northern Irishman progressing by virtue of a whitewash victory.

However, former Lakeside champion Stephen Bunting endured another disappointing afternoon, as he was beaten 6-4 in the opening-round by Irishman Mick McGowan. Steve Beaton was another former world champion to depart in round-one, losing to 2012 Lakeside winner Christian Kist.
