Mensur Suljovic produced arguably the most remarkable 9-darter in history at the Bulls Super League Eastern Europe on Sunday afternoon. Suljovic, who has established himself in the PDC’s top 20, hit the perfect leg in his typically unconventional style.
The Austrian kicked off the leg with successive 170’s (T20, T20, Bull), before completing the 9-darter with a magnificent 161 checkout. The 9-darter included an unprecedented three bullseyes, which led Sky Sports expert Wayne Mardle to label it as ‘without doubt the best 9-darter ever hit in competition play’. He certainly has a case!
This is the second 9-dart leg recorded in the history of the Bulls Super League. It was hit twelve months ago by Suljovic’s younger compatriot Rowby-John Rodriguez, but ironically, Mensur was playing Rowby’s younger brother Roxy-James when he completed the feat.
The Bull’s Super League is open to 16 players within Eastern Europe and it’s played within a round-robin format. The winner of the tournament is assured of a place in the preliminary round of the William Hill World Darts Championships, although given Suljovic’s healthy ranking, his place at Ally Pally is already assured.
‘The Gentle’ had come agonisingly close to hitting two televised 9-darters over the last year. He wired D18 for a spectacular perfect leg against Michael Smith in November’s Players Championship Finals, and one month later in the World Championships, D18 again cost Suljovic in his second-round clash against David Pallett.
Nevertheless, it was a case of third time lucky for the unorthodox Austrian. All 9-darters are extremely special and dramatic, although this particular feat is made all the more remarkable given the unconventional route chosen by Suljovic. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see Mensur repeat these heroics on the televised stage?!
