Ian White won the fifth PDC ranking title of his career with a stunning whitewash victory over world number one Michael van Gerwen in the final of Players Championship five at the Barnsley Metrodome on Sunday afternoon.

White was in imperious form throughout the day and produced his best performance of the afternoon in the curtain raiser against MvG. He averaged 106.2 and hit four maximums en route to scooping the £10,000 winner’s cheque, which will see him move up to 11th on the PDC Order of Merit.

White had won just the solitary game over the first two days of action in Barnsley this weekend, but he moved into round-three with hard-fought victories against Ronnie Baxter and Steve Hine. ‘The Diamond’ then secured his quarter-final berth by virtue of successive 6-4 triumphs against Scott Dale and Jermaine Wattimena respectively.

The Stoke star faced the exciting talent of Josh Payne in the quarters, but White battled to a 6-3 victory to set up a semi-final clash against Robbie Green, who reached the semi-finals for the second time this weekend.

Green had been in spectacular form throughout the day. After beating Andy Parsons, ‘Kong’ stormed into round-three with a whitewash victory over Mervyn King. Green then came through three consecutive last-leg deciders against Brendan Dolan, Peter Wright, and Cristo Reyes, before losing out 6-4 to White in the semis.

Van Gerwen kicked off Sunday’s campaign with a convincing victory over Nathan Derry, before he edged past an improving Paul Nicholson 6-4 in round two. MvG then defeated former world finalist Kevin Painter 6-3, before whitewashing Dutch Darts Masters finalist Daryl Gurney 6-0 to ease into the quarter-finals.

‘The Green Machine’ faced former World-Youth champion Keegan Brown in the quarter-finals, as Brown enjoyed a welcome return to form in Barnsley. The Isle of Wight star beat fellow youngsters Nathan Aspinall and Chris Dobey, before succumbing 6-3 to MvG in the last eight.

The world number one faced Dave Chisnall in the last four, after the St Helen’s ace had overcome the likes of Kyle Anderson, Jamie Lewis and Simon Whitlock to reach the semi-finals. However, MvG’s class shone through, as he dispatched Chizzy 6-1 to reach his fourth consecutive Players Championship final.

Nevertheless, for the second day in succession, the 26-year-old Dutchman was thwarted in the final, and surprisingly he has only won 1 of his 4 Players Championship finals in 2016. Despite this, he has still performed with tremendous consistency over the three days, and he’s earned a sizeable £22,000 towards the Order of Merit.

However, there were many big names were not present in Barnsley today. Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis, James Wade and Vincent van der Voort all withdrew this morning, whilst world champion Gary Anderson was also not in attendance.

Yesterday’s winner Benito van de Pas was unable to produce similar heroics as he was beaten by his compatriot Ron Meulenkamp in round-one. Stephen Bunting exited in the last 128 against his former BDO colleague James Wilson, whilst Mark Webster and Terry Jenkins were defeated 6-3 by Jeffrey de Zwaan and Ryan Palmer, also in the first-round.

Third seed Michael Smith was beaten 6-3 by Josh Payne, who was eventually beaten by Ian White in the last eight. Elsewhere, Jelle Klaasen suffered a surprise second-round defeat to his compatriot Berry van Peer, whilst Robert Thornton lost 6-3 to quick-fire Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena at the same stage.
