World number one Michael van Gerwen will begin his quest for a fourth European Tour title of 2016 against either Jonny Clayton or a home-nation qualifier, when the Austrian Darts Open begins in Vienna on Friday.

The £115,000 PDC European Tour event will see 48 players competing from Friday June 10th to Sunday June 12th at the Multiversum in Schwechat, Vienna. Van Gerwen, a two-time champion here, will be hoping to continue his unblemished European Tour record in Austria this weekend.

Phil Taylor will also be making his first European Tour appearance of the year, and he’ll face a tough tie against either Mervyn King or Steve West in round-two. Meanwhile, second seed Peter Wright will meet either quick-fire Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena, or recent World Cup semi-finalist Brendan Dolan.

Three-time European Tour winner, Michael Smith, will lock horns against Mike Zuydwijk or Mark Frost, whilst fourth seed Dave Chisnall  will play Jamie Caven or 2012 Austrian Darts Open winner Justin Pipe.

Vincent van der Voort, champion here in 2014, meets Steve Beaton in the pick of the first-round encounters. The winner of that tie will face recent Players Championship winner Gerwyn Price in the second-round on Saturday.

Austria’s number one Mensur Suljovic will enjoy partisan home support when he faces either Ross Smith or Kyle Anderson, whilst Suljovic’s stablemate Kim Huybrechts could face in-form Chris Dobey in round-two, if Dobey can overcome Darron Brown.

It could be a clash of the Cobras in round-two, as eighth seed Jelle Klaasen will meet either Jeffrey de Zwaan or a host-nation qualifier. Another all-Dutch affair sees Ron Meulenkamp meet Jeffrey de Graaf in the first-round, with the winner facing 14th seed Simon Whitlock.

Stephen Bunting will meet fellow Lakeside champion Christian Kist in the last 32, if Kist overcomes German Darts Masters quarter-finalist James Richardson. Alan Norris will face Steve McNally or a host-nation qualifier, whilst seventh seed Benito van de Pas will meet the winner of Friday evening’s clash between Josh Payne and Wes Newton.

Nine-time major finalist Terry Jenkins will face veteran Wayne Jones or Belgian youngster Dimitri van den Bergh, whilst World Grand-Prix champion Robert Thornton could meet either a host-nation qualifier or Nigel Heydon. Finally, sixth seed Ian White will play either Simon Stevenson or former BDO number 1 James Wilson on Saturday afternoon.

Gary Anderson, James Wade, Adrian Lewis and Raymond van Barneveld are the high-profile names not competing this weekend, as they prepare for the continuation of the World Series at the Auckland Darts Masters next week.
