Grand Slam of Darts 2016- Qualifiers Confirmed!

Former finalist Robert Thornton was among the eight players to qualify for next month’s Grand Slam of Darts after coming through the PDC qualifier at the Barnsley Metrodome on Sunday afternoon, on a day which saw five players book maiden appearances in Wolverhampton.

Thornton booked his return to the Civic Hall after a string of fine performances on Sunday afternoon. ‘The Thorn’ dropped just five legs in his four matches, kicking off proceedings by beating both Scott Dale and Andy Hamilton 5-1.

The former World Grand Prix champion then defeated Calum Loose 5-2 in round-three to set up a decisive clash with Andrew Gilding. The Scot then prevailed in comprehensive fashion, recording his third 5-1 triumph of the day.

Brendan Dolan came through successive deciding leg shoot-outs to seal his place in Wolverhampton next month. Dolan began his qualification campaign with victories over Ryan Harrington and Jan Dekker, before edging out Nigel Heydon 5-4.

The Northern Irishman then faced a decisive fourth-round battle with Kim Huybrechts who had lost just the solitary leg in his preceeding three matches. However, Dolan squeezed past the Belgian in an attritional deciding-leg to confirm his qualification.

Darren Webster upset the odds to secure a place in just his second Grand Slam of Darts. Webster received a bye to round-two after Dean Winstanley withdrew, where he then defeated former world champion Mark Webster 5-2.

‘The Demolition Man’ faced Players Championship winner Josh Payne in the third-round but experience paid dividends as Webster prevailed 5-4. He then met world number ten Jelle Klaasen in the winner-takes-all fourth-round clash, but the highly-fancied Dutchman suffered a surprising 5-2 loss to the 48-year-old from Norwich.

Ted Evetts dropped just three legs in qualifying for the Grand Slam for the very first time; recording fine victories over a number of high-profile players. The 19-year-old kicked off proceedings with a 5-0 whitewash victory over Jonny Clayton, before beating former BDO star Jeffrey de Graaf by the same score.

Evetts defeated another Welshman in the third-round of qualifying, dumping out two-time Players Championship winner Gerwyn Price, before sealing his spot in his first ever PDC major with an emphatic 5-1 victory against young Dutch star Mike Zuydwijk.

Two further Grand Slam debutants will be James Wilson and Chris Dobey. Wilson defeated Wes Newton, before reaching round-three with a whitewash victory over Ian Withers. ‘The Jammie Dodger’ then convincingly defeated Daryl Gurney, before sealing qualification with a 5-3 win over nine-time major finalist Terry Jenkins.

Dobey’s route to qualification wasn’t any easier. He kicked off his campaign with a 5-0 whitewash of Jim Walker, before producing a fine performance to defeat Steve Beaton 5-2. Dobey then edged out fellow youngster Rowby-John Rodriguez, before clinching his place in Wolverhampton with a nail-biting last-leg win over Tony Newell.

Dimitri van den Bergh came through some tight tussles to secure his maiden appearance at next month’s Grand Slam. The Belgian dumped out Joe Murnan in a last-leg decider in round-one, before seeing off Paul Milford 5-3. Van den Bergh then beat Ryan Palmer 5-2, before whitewashing Mickey Mansell in his decisive last 16 clash.

The fifth and final debutant out of the eight qualifiers is Nathan Derry. Derry, ranked 82nd on the PDC Order of Merit, moved into the third-round after claiming consecutive 5-3 wins against Jeff Batham and Dennis Smith. Derry then breezed past Johnny Haines, before surviving three match darts to edge past Scott Taylor and seal his spot.

However, there were a host of big-names who were dumped out in the first-round of qualification. Michael Smith, a semi-finalist in Wolverhampton last year, was beaten 5-3 by Luke Woodhouse, as Bully Boy’s struggles continue.

Simon Whitlock suffered a shock 5-2 defeat to Ian Withers, whilst Benito van de Pas and Ian White were edged out in last-leg deciders by Dennis Smith and Jamie Robinson. However, Whitlock, White and van de Pas are still set to compete at next month’s Grand Slam following their multiple Players Championship successes this year.

Nevertheless, there are still a number of high-profile stars who definitely won’t be present at the Civic Hall next month. Last year’s quarter-finalist Mark Webster was dumped out in the second round of qualifying by his namesake Darren Webster, whilst former semi-finalist Mervyn King was beaten by Scott Taylor.

Vincent van der Voort will not be appearing in Wolverhampton after suffering a surprise second-round defeat to Ryan Palmer. The in-form Justin Pipe was beaten at the same stage by former world champion Stephen Bunting, whilst Steve Beaton lost 5-2 to Chris Dobey, fresh from appearing in his maiden PDC final on Friday.

Daryl Gurney and Joe Cullen, both of whom have received invitations to compete in the World Series of Darts Finals, were beaten in round-three of qualifying by James Wilson and Terry Jenkins respectively,  whilst former world champion Stephen Bunting was demolished 5-1 by Mickey Mansell at the same stage.
