World Series of Darts Finals: Qualifiers Confirmed!

Simon Whitlock and Steve Beaton were among the four stars to qualify for next month’s Ladbrokes World Series of Darts Finals after coming through qualifiers held at the Barnsley Metrodome on Sunday. Brendan Dolan secured a magnificent qualification-double, whilst Joe Murnan showed his class to seal his spot in Glasgow.

Simon Whitlock continued his fine run of form to secure qualification for the World Series of Darts Finals. Whitlock competed in the Sydney Darts Masters and Perth Darts Masters earlier this year, but lost in the opening round on both occasions, to Peter Wright and Raymond van Barneveld respectively.

The Aussie ace, who has recorded two Players Championship victories within the last month, breezed through to the final round of qualifying, before prevailing in an extremely tight tussle to confirm his place at the Braehead Arena next month.

‘The Wizard’ recorded comprehensive wins against Dick van Dijk and Shaun Griffiths, before thrashing Nigel Heydon 6-1 to reach the last eight. Whitlock had dropped just four legs in his opening three games, but his decisive contest with William O’Connor was a nail-biting affair, which saw the Aussie claim the spoils in a last-leg shootout.

Elsewhere, Steve Beaton produced some vintage performances to clinch a spot in his first ever World Series event. ‘The Bronzed Adonis’ kicked off his campaign with a hard-fought 6-4 win against Jamie Robinson, before beating Grand Slam qualifier Ted Evetts by the same scoreline.

Beaton then recorded his third successive 6-4 victory of the qualifiers as he saw off Johnny Haines, to set up a decisive last eight clash with Dutch star Christian Kist. Kist had already claimed the scalps of Ian White and Kevin Painter, but Beaton prevailed in the clash of the world-champions to confirm his qualification.

Brendan Dolan rounded off a perfect day in Barnsley by qualifying for the World Series of Darts Finals. ‘The History-Maker’ secured Grand Slam qualification earlier in the day and maintained his consistency to complete the double.

Dolan began proceedings with a 6-3 win over Dutchman Ron Meulenkamp, before whitewashing Robert Owen. Dolan then edged out Dirk van Duijvenbode in a tense affair, before confirming his place in Glasgow with a 6-4 victory over nine-time major finalist Terry Jenkins, who again fell at the final hurdle of qualification.

Elsewhere, Joe Murnan will make his World Series debut next month after coming through a series of tough matches. ‘Shaggy’ kicked off his qualification campaign with a deciding-leg win against Belgium’s Mike De Decker, before winning 6-1 against Welshman Jamie Lewis, who appeared in the inaugural World Series event twelve months ago.

Murnan then defeated Ryan Meikle to set up a decisive clash with recent German Darts Champion Alan Norris in the last eight. Norris was the favourite, but Murnan produced a fine display to record a 6-4 victory and seal his spot in Glasgow.

Despite this, a number of big names suffered chastening defeats at the Barnsley Metrodome. Former world champion Stephen Bunting, who competed in the inaugural World Series of Darts Finals last year, was beaten convincingly at the first hurdle by Harry Robinson.

Dimitri van den Bergh, who qualified for the Grand Slam earlier in the day, failed to replicate those heroics as he lost 6-1 to Vincent van der Voort, whilst Chris Dobey went down to Dirk van Duijvenbode in the same round.

Ian White, who was top seed for the World Series qualifier, suffered a 6-4 second-round defeat to Christian Kist, whilst 2008 world champion Mark Webster lost to Johnny Haines by the same scoreline. Elsewhere, Mervyn King and Vincent van der Voort were beaten at the same stage, losing to Andy Boulton and David Pallett respectively.

Terry Jenkins endured a highly frustrating afternoon in Barnsley. The 53-year-old was beaten by James Wilson in the final round of qualifying for the Grand Slam of Darts, and ‘The Bull’ was beaten at the same stage of the World Series qualifier by former World Grand Prix finalist Brendan Dolan.
