2017 PDC Q-School: Day One Report!

Prakash Jiwa.jpg

Prakash Jiwa, Lee Bryant, Stephen Burton and Jim Brown all secured PDC Tour Cards on the opening day of the 2017 PDC Qualifying School at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan on Thursday afternoon, on a day which saw a record field of 434 players battling it out for the right to compete on the PDC Pro Tour over the next two years.

Prakash Jiwa enjoyed the honour of being the first man to secure a tour card at this year’s Q-School. The man nicknamed ‘The Apache’ has come through Q-School on two separate occasions and performed superbly to make it an illustrious treble, becoming only the fifth player to achieve this feat.

Jiwa received a bye in the opening round before storming into the last 128 with a whitewash victory over James Young. He then recorded successive 5-3 victories over Davyd Venken and Jim Walker respectively to reach the last 32.

The Rugby-based star then edged through last-leg deciders against both Richard North and Steve Douglas to set up a decisive last eight showdown with Ireland’s Steve Lennon who won a PDC Development Tour title last year. Nevertheless, Jiwa’s experience paid dividends as he prevailed 5-2 to regain his PDC Tour Card.

Lee Bryant secured his maiden PDC Tour Card after dumping out a host of talented names. Bryant is a relative unknown to many darts fans but did reach the semi-finals of the BDO International Open in 2012, where he defeated the likes of Martin Atkins and two-time Lakeside world champion Scott Waites.

The 31-year-old started his campaign with a comfortable win over Michael Huntley, before edging out Teuvo Haverinen in a deciding-leg shootout. Bryant then claimed a sizeable scalp by whitewashing Mickey Mansell, before coming through his second last-leg shootout to defeat talented Dutchman Mareno Michels.

The Sussex star then whitewashed Paul Russell before causing an upset to defeat talented North-East star Callan Rydz. Bryant faced former Challenge Tour winner Ritchie Edhouse in his seventh and final game of the day and held his nerve to prevail in his third last-leg shootout of the afternoon.

Ipswich-based window-cleaner Stephen Burton will compete on the PDC circuit for the very first time after enjoying a dream qualifying school debut. The 29-year-old made a sparkling start to his Q-School campaign dropping just one leg in defeating Charlie Symons and John McCafferty.

Burton then edged past Japan’s number one Keita Ono, before thrashing former BDO star Madars Razma 5-1 to reach the last 32. He then recorded a hard-fought triumph against Arjan Konterman, before seeing off the veteran duo of Darren Johnson and Steve Hine to secure a maiden Tour Card at the first time of asking.

Finally, the last man to secure his Tour Card on Thursday was Scottish star Jim Brown. The 45-year-old, who competed in the World Masters back in 2013, dumped out former World Championship finalist Kirk Shepherd en route to securing a place on the PDC circuit at the first attempt.

Brown began with hard-fought victories over Lennart Efraimsson and Nicholas Lewis, before easing past Sean Johnson and Michael Plooy to reach round-five. The Scot then claimed the scalps of Mick Todd and 2008 world finalist Kirk Shepherd, before securing his Tour Card with a fine 5-2 victory over former Development Tour winner Sven Groen.

Elsewhere, a number of big-name stars endured disappointing starts to their Qualifying School campaigns. Richie Burnett was the biggest first-round casualty on the opening day, after losing to Mickey Mansell, whilst former World-Youth champion James Hubbard was beaten in his opening game by Kevin Lane.

Three-time world champion John Part suffered a surprise deciding-leg defeat against former World Masters participant Radoslaw Szaganski in the last 256, whilst two-time world finalist Peter Manley lost out to Part’s compatriot David Fatum in round-two.

Former Players Championship Finals winner Paul Nicholson was also beaten at the same stage by 2015 World-Youth finalist Nathan Aspinall. ‘The Asset’ kicked off his campaign with a 5-3 victory over Harry Ward before succumbing to ‘The Asp’, who then dumped out former world finalist Ronnie Baxter in the next round.

The experienced trio of Andy Smith, Wayne Jones and Colin Osborne also suffered second-round exits at the Robin Park Tennis Centre, whilst former UK Open finalist Barrie Bates was beaten in round-three. Meanwhile, 2005 World Championship finalist Mark Dudbridge recorded three wins on day one, before losing in the last 64.

Friday sees a further four automatic Tour Cards on offer, whilst ranking points on the Qualifying School Order of Merit are up for grabs. There are also a further 12 Tour Cards allocated to the leading players on the Q-School Order of Merit, which will be finalised following the conclusion of day four on Sunday.
