2017 PDC Q-School: Day Two Report!

Ting Chi Royden Lam, Richard North, Ritchie Edhouse and Maik Langendorf became the latest four players to secure PDC Tour Cards on day two at the 2017 Qualifying School at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan on Friday afternoon; a day which saw 423 players jostling it out for the chance to compete professionally on the PDC Pro Tour.

The first man to claim a tour card on Friday was Richard North, who competed on the PDC Challenge Tour last year. North reached round-five yesterday, before losing to eventual tour card winner Prakash Jiwa, but he defeated a host of experienced names to triumph and secure a place on the PDC Pro Tour for the very first time.

The Swindon star dropped just five legs in his opening four matches, as he defeated Stephen Butkeraitis, Mark Devon, Arjan Konterman and Mark Wilson. He then dumped out the experienced duo of Steve Hine and Antonio Alcinas, before edging past Scotland’s Jamie Bain 5-4 in his decisive last eight clash to seal his tour card.

Ting Chi Royden Lam stormed through Q-School on Friday afternoon to secure a tour card for the second time in his career. The Hong Kong ace previously triumphed at Q-School back in 2013 and replicated those heroics once again; dropping just eight legs throughout the course of his seven matches.

The 41-year-old breezed through to round-four without dropping a leg; having whitewashed Scott Darbyshire, Jason Lowe and Sam Hamilton respectively. He then eased past Jason Wilson, before battling past Scott Taylor 5-3 to move to within two victories of securing a place on the PDC Pro Tour.

The soft-tip sensation thrashed Peter Jacques 5-1 to reach the last eight, where he faced Portugal’s Jose Sousa, who previously competed in the 2011 World Championship. The 42-year-old was vying to become the first Portuguese star to secure a PDC tour card, but he was denied by the imperious Lam, who prevailed via a 5-2 scoreline.

Ritchie Edhouse recovered from yesterday’s heartbreak to secure his maiden PDC Tour Card. Edhouse was just one leg away from securing a tour card twenty-four hours earlier, having lost in Thursday’s last-eight in a deciding-leg shootout against Lee Bryant. Despite this, the Basildon star went one step better in Wigan on Friday afternoon.

The former Challenge Tour winner kicked off proceedings with a whitewash win over Ian Hurley, before thrashing 2006 UK Open finalist Barrie Bates 5-1 in round-two. Edhouse saw off a battling Scott Dale to reach round-four, where he recorded his second whitewash of the afternoon with victory against Eddie White.

The Essex ace then defeated Austria’s Michael Rasztovits 5-3, before thrashing Craig Gilchrist 5-1 to set up a decisive last eight clash against Northern Irish star Mickey Mansell. Mansell was the favourite, but Edhouse produced the upset to round-off the most significant day of his darting career to date.

Maik Langendorf claimed a PDC Tour Card for the very first time to become the third current Austrian tour-card holder on the PDC circuit. Langendorf represented Austria at the 2010 World Cup of Darts and competed in two European Tour events last year, but his performances today mark the greatest achievements of his steel-tip career.

The 45-year-old kicked off his campaign with 5-1 victories over Marko Puls and Dylan Duo, before easing past Mark Lawrence to set up a tough tie with the veteran Alan Tabern. However, Langendorf continued his fine form to record a 5-3 victory over the St Helen’s star.

Langendorf then defeated former BDO man Willy van de Wiel, before edging past yesterday’s quarter-finalist Steve Lennon 5-4 to reach the last eight. Langendorf was pitted against former BDO star Madars Razma, who had accounted for Paul Nicholson in the last 16. Nevertheless, the Austrian secured another 5-4 triumph to win his tour card.

Elsewhere, a number of high-profile stars continued to struggle. Former world finalist Mark Dudbridge suffered a deciding-leg defeat against Andy White, whilst Stuart Kellett lost to Ryan Harrington by the same scoreline. Richie Burnett’s wait for a first win at Q-School continues, as ‘The Prince of Wales’ was beaten convincingly by Ricky Sudale.

Former World-Youth champions James Hubbard and Arron Monk also suffered early exits. Hubbard lost in the opening round to North American’s David Fatum, whilst Monk was whitewashed in round-two by Kevin Dowling. Meanwhile, 2015 World Youth finalist Nathan Aspinall lost his opening match to Russian World Cup star Boris Koltsov.

Three-time world champion John Part was beaten in the last 256 for the second day in succession. ‘Darth Maple’ received a bye in round-one before losing 5-3 to Paul Fellows, whilst two-time world finalist Peter Manley also suffered second-round defeat to Chris Matthews.

Saturday sees a further four automatic Tour Cards on offer, whilst ranking points on the Qualifying School Order of Merit are up for grabs. There are also a further 12 Tour Cards allocated to the leading players on the Q-School Order of Merit, which will be finalised following the conclusion of day four on Sunday.
