History-making Van Gerwen hits TWO nine-darters in same game en route to winning UK Open Qualifier Four!

Michael van Gerwen created history at Coral UK Open qualifier four on Friday afternoon; becoming only the second player in darting history to register two nine-dart finishes in the same game.

The world champion achieved the remarkable feat during his third-round win over Ryan Murray, before going on to defeat Gary Anderson in the final to clinch his first Pro Tour title of the season at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan this evening.

Van Gerwen hit his first nine-darter in the fourth leg of the contest against Murray, hitting scores of 180 and 177 before converting a 144 kill. He then repeated the feat in the eighth leg to seal a 6-2 triumph; registering visits of 177 and 180 before taking out 144 once more to record his second nine-darter within the space of four legs.

‘The Green Machine’ becomes only the second player in the history of professional darts to achieve this stunning feat, following in the footsteps of Phil Taylor. The 16-time world champion recorded two nine-dart finishes in the 2010 Premier League final, where he edged out James Wade in a titanic tussle.

Van Gerwen’s moments of genius came on one of the PDC’s two live streamed boards, but the day could have been very different for the world number one. ‘Mighty Mike’ survived two missed match darts from Adam Hunt in his second-round clash, to set up what would be a history-making tussle against Scotland’s Ryan Murray.

After defeating Murray 6-2, MvG defeated Hong Kong’s Ting Chi Royden Lam by the same scoreline, before thrashing Zoran Lerchbacher 6-1. Lerchbacher secured his UK Open qualification with a fine victory over two-time world champion Adrian Lewis, but the Austrian was unable to trouble the Dutch ace.

In the last eight, Van Gerwen defeated Peter Wright for the second time within 24 hours. The world champion eased past Wright in last night’s Premier League tie and defeated Snakebite 6-3 this afternoon, to avenge his loss to the Scot in UK Open qualifier three.

‘Mighty Mike’ faced 2004 World Championship finalist Kevin Painter in the semi-finals. Painter rolled back the years to reach his first PDC ranking semi-final since July 2014; beating Daryl Gurney, Terry Jenkins, Raymond van Barneveld and Michael Smith to reach the last four.

His last 16 victory against Van Barneveld was particularly impressive. The five-time world champion had dropped just six legs in defeating Cristo Reyes, Rowby-John Rodriguez and Vincent Kamphuis.

Nevertheless, Painter edged out Barney 6-4, winning his six legs in 11, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 13 darts respectively. However, ‘The Artist’ was unable to thwart the world number one, as Van Gerwen ran out a comprehensive 6-2 winner.

The Boxtel ace faced world number two Gary Anderson in Friday’s final, after ‘The Flying Scotsman’ reached his second UK Open qualifier in just his third Pro Tour appearance of the year. Anderson battled past Paul Rowley in his opening tie, before whitewashing Ryan Harrington to reach round-four.

The two-time world champion then overcame Justin Pipe 6-3, before dropping just three legs in defeating Rob Cross and Chris Dobey to reach the semi-finals. In the last four, the Scottish ace faced Ryan Searle, who was appearing in his maiden PDC semi-final.

Searle came through a last-leg decider against Matthew Edgar in the last 256, before recording a convincing 6-3 win over seven-time PDC ranking winner Jamie Caven to reach round-three.

He continued his fine form with victories over Andy Boulton, Chris Quantock and Darren Webster to set up a last-eight clash with Dave Chisnall. Searle stunned the St Helen’s star 6-3 to set up a semi-final clash with the two-time world champion, but Anderson prevailed 6-1 to set up a dream repeat of last month’s World Championship Final.

Van Gerwen drew first blood in the final via tops, but Anderson levelled after following up visits of 180 and 177 with a majestic 11-darter. The Dutchman regained the lead on D6, before Anderson held throw on D10 after Van Gerwen missed the bull for a spectacular 132 outshot.

The fifth leg was a dramatic affair. MvG squandered six darts at double to hold, but the Scot failed to capitalise, as the Dutchman eventually sank D1 to hold. This proved to be a turning point, as Van Gerwen secured the first break of throw moments later after following up his second maximum by pegging D16.

Both players fired in maximums in the seventh leg, but Van Gerwen converted D16 to hold throw and move to within a leg of victory. Anderson followed up a sublime visit of 171 by dispatching a 102 finish to prolong the contest at 5-3 adrift, but the world number one maintained his composure to seal the win and scoop the £10,000 winner’s cheque.

It was a magnificent day for ‘The Green Machine’, who recovered from the disappointment of last weekend’s underwhelming campaign to triumph in sensational style on Friday afternoon. This propels the world champion up to second on the UK Open Order of Merit behind Peter Wright, with just two events remaining.

However, it was a disappointing day for a number of big names. World number nine Jelle Klaasen was edged out by the veteran Terry Temple in his opening game, whilst former BDO world number one James Wilson is yet to register any prize money towards the UK Open Order of Merit after losing in round-two to former UK Open finalist Barrie Bates.

Jamie Caven suffered his fourth successive opening-round loss after losing 6-3 to eventual semi-finalist Ryan Searle. Former world champion Stephen Bunting was defeated at the first hurdle by the veteran Andy Jenkins, whilst 2007 UK Open finalist Vincent van der Voort lost out to former World-Youth finalist Nathan Aspinall.

The Coral UK Open Qualifiers continue over the weekend, with the penultimate qualifier taking place on Saturday, before the final day of action takes place on Sunday February 12th. The full list of results from today’s event can be viewed below!
