Players Championship One Report!

Alan Norris claimed the opening Players Championship event of the year after defeating inspired debutant Peter Jacques at the Barnsley Metrodome on Saturday afternoon. Norris performed superbly throughout the day; dropping just 14 legs en route to scooping the £10,000 winner’s cheque and securing his second Players Championship title.

Nevertheless, it was also a brilliant day for Yorkshire star Peter Jacques. Jacques failed to secure a PDC Tour Card at Q-School last month but was afforded the chance to compete in Barnsley after multiple tour-card holders were absent this weekend, and he certainly took full advantage of the opportunity.

The Huddersfield ace claimed a multitude of high-profile scalps in arguably the greatest day of his darting career thus far, only falling at the final hurdle as he scooped the £6,000 runner’s up prize.

Norris made an imperious start to the final; opening up with a maximum before rounding-off a 13-dart hold via D10. ‘Chuck’ extended his cushion after winning a scrappy leg on D1, before pegging tops for a commanding 3-0 cushion.

Jacques opened his account on D6, although he was unable to make further inroads. Norris followed up a brilliant visit of 162 with a 15-dart hold on tops for a 4-1 advantage, before the former Lakeside finalist converted clinical finishes of 74 and 72 to complete an emphatic triumph and seal the third PDC ranking title of his career.

Earlier in the day, Norris kicked off proceedings with a tough first-round tie against the in-form Rob Cross. However, ‘Chuck’ defeated the former Challenge Tour star 6-4, before producing an astonishing run of form to obliterate his opponents.

Norris dropped just five legs in his next four matches, easing past Ryan Searle, Mike De Decker, Keegan Brown and Kyle Anderson respectively to set up a semi-final showdown with Simon Whitlock.

‘The Wizard’ won two of the six UK Open qualifiers held in Wigan earlier this month and confirmed his place in the last-four after defeating Rowby-John Rodriguez, Andy Boulton, Darren Webster, Daryl Gurney and Steve West.

Nevertheless, Whitlock’s hopes of securing a third Pro Tour title in as many weeks were extinguished by Norris, who prevailed 6-4 to secure a place in his first PDC ranking final since winning the German Darts Championship last October.

On the other side of the draw, Jacques performed magnificently to reach the final on his Pro Tour debut. The former World Masters participant kicked off the day with convincing victories over Paul Nicholson and Josh Payne, before surviving a match-dart to edge out William O’Connor in the last 32.

The Huddersfield ace then claimed the prized scalp of world number two Gary Anderson in the last 16, before stunning Anderson’s protege Michael Smith 6-4 in the last eight. In the semi-finals, another big name awaited, as he faced eight-time major winner James Wade.

‘The Machine’ had defeated Ted Evetts, Adam Hunt, Chris Quantock, Mervyn King and Cristo Reyes to reach the last four, but missed doubles plagued the left-hander in the semi-finals, as Jacques fought back from 2-0 down to record a stunning 6-4 triumph.

Elsewhere, five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld was beaten 6-4 in the opening round by world number eight Mensur Suljovic, who was making his first Pro Tour appearance of the year after missing the UK Open qualifiers due to personal reasons.

Barney’s compatriot Vincent van der Voort also lost out at the same stage in a deciding leg shoot-out against Brendan Dolan, whilst the seeded quartet of Joe Cullen, Stephen Bunting, Jamie Caven and Ronny Huybrechts all suffered first-round exits.

Top seed Peter Wright was denied his fourth Pro Tour title of the month after succumbing 6-3 to Kyle Anderson in the last 16, whilst second seed Mensur Suljovic was beaten at the same stage by Spanish star Cristo Reyes.

Premier League star Jelle Klaasen was thrashed 6-2 by David Pallett in round two, whilst Kim Huybrechts and Adrian Lewis were beaten in their respective board finals against Keegan Brown and Michael Smith.

There were a number of high-profile absentees in Barnsley. World number one Michael van Gerwen opted not to enter the opening Players Championship double-header, whilst Phil Taylor and Terry Jenkins didn’t feature after both men confirmed that they won’t be competing in floor tournaments in 2017.
