2017 UK Open: Day One Report!

Gary Anderson and James Wade were dumped out on a dramatic opening day at the 2017 Coral UK Open at Butlin’s Minehead on Friday evening, to throw the tournament wide open after the withdrawal of world number one Michael van Gerwen earlier in the day.

Paul Hogan produced an astonishing display to dump out world number two Gary Anderson in an epic deciding-leg tussle. The Riley’s qualifier, ranked 77th in the BDO system, dumped out Keegan Brown and Jamie Lewis earlier in the day, before edging out Anderson with a 95.56 average and three maximums.

‘The Flying Scotsman’ was the bookmaker’s favourite after the withdrawal of Michael van Gerwen with a back problem, but Anderson was cruelly denied victory after he had a match dart bounce out of the bullseye in a decider.Hogan capitalised and pinned D8 to banish the demons from his Lakeside defeat to Glen Durrant earlier in the year.

Top seed Peter Wright booked his place in round-four with a convincing 10-3 victory against James Richardson. Snakebite was plagued by an ankle injury sustained in last night’s Premier League, but he played through the pain barrier; averaging 96.86, landing three maximums and converting 56% of his double attempts.

He’ll face Dave Chisnall in round-five, after ‘Chizzy’ produced one of the performances of the evening to ease past Jamie Caven on board two. Chisnall averaged 102.44, landed seven maximums and converted 59% of his double attempts to continue from where he left off in Exeter last night.

2014 champion Adrian Lewis edged out world number five James Wade in a pulsating affair. ‘Jackpot’ was plagued by missed doubles for much of the contest, but fired in nine maximums and averaged 98.30 to record a 10-8 victory over the two-time UK Open champion.

Two-time UK Open champion Raymond van Barneveld defeated a spirited Barrie Bates in a repeat of the 2006 UK Open Final. Bates led 5-4 at one stage, but Van Barneveld rallied and won six of the remaining seven legs to complete a convincing 10-6 victory with a 94.6 average.

Premier League strugglers Jelle Klaasen and Kim Huybrechts also triumphed; registering hard-fought victories over Jonny Clayton and Brian Woods respectively. 2012 UK Open champion Robert Thornton crashed out after suffering a humbling 10-2 defeat against a rampant Joe Cullen.

Second seed Simon Whitlock enjoyed a memorable birthday after thrashing promising youngster Chris Quantock 10-2 in the opening match on the main stage. ‘The Wizard’ averaged 101.42 to round-off a clinical display as he goes in search of his maiden UK Open crown.

Alan Norris and Daryl Gurney were the first players to secure their spots in round-four. Gurney thrashed Riley’s qualifier Alex Roy 10-2, whilst Norris defeated Dutchman Yordi Meeuwisse by the same scoreline. Elsewhere, Ronnie Baxter continued his resurgence with a fine 10-8 victory against an in-form Darren Webster.

Michael Smith wired D12 for a nine-darter in his third-round clash, but ‘Bully-Boy’ was in rampant form and eased past the in-form John Henderson 10-4. Elsewhere, multiple ranking-winner Ian White coasted into the last 32 with an emphatic 10-2 win against Riley’s qualifier Paul Barham.

It was also a profitable evening for a number of the PDC’s most promising youngsters. Ted Evetts continued his fine form with an emphatic victory against 2015 semi-finalist Andrew Gilding, whilst Chris Dobey and David Pallett saw off the veteran duo of Kevin Painter and Steve Beaton respectively.

Former World Championship finalist Kirk Shepherd edged out UK Open ever-present Wayne Jones to seal his spot in the last 32, and he’ll be joined by John Michael and Alan Tabern, who produced impressive performances to dump out Brendan Dolan and Mervyn King.

It was a successful night for a number of Dutchman. Ron Meulenkamp survived a valiant fightback from Ricky Evans to set up a fourth round clash with his compatriot Raymond van Barneveld.

Benito van de Pas and Vincent van der Voort recorded commanding wins over Matthew Dennant and Ronny Huybrechts, whilst Dirk van Duijvenbode defeated former Lakeside world champion Christian Kist in an all-Dutch affair.

Mark Webster came down from 9-8 behind to defeat Ross Twell in a marathon tussle, and his fellow Welshman Gerwyn Price also triumphed; comfortably seeing off Taunton ace Justin Pipe 10-5.

Rob Cross and Ryan Searle, both of whom secured tour cards this year via the Challenge Tour Order of Merit, clinched victories against Johnny Haines and Mick McGowan and they will now collide for a place in round-five, whilst Martin Lukeman reached the last 32 after surviving an incredible thirteen match darts to edge out Rob Hewson.
