Big names absent for Players Championships 7 & 8!

Anderson Van Gerwen

The entries for this weekend’s Players Championship double-header in Barnsley have been confirmed, although there are set to be a few big-name absentees; most notably the world’s top two players. Michael van Gerwen and Gary Anderson will both miss this weekend’s action, as they’re competing in an exhibition in Edinburgh on Saturday.

Van Gerwen and Anderson currently occupy the top two spots on the Players Championship Order of Merit. ‘The Green Machine’ moved to the top of the rankings with victory over Peter Wright at Players Championship Six in Milton Keynes last Sunday, whilst Anderson defeated Snakebite to prevail at Players Championship Two.

Wright will subsequently be top seed in the absence of MvG and Anderson, as he aims to continue his sensational form which has already seen him secure six titles in 2017, including his first televised major title at the Coral UK Open last month.

One of the favourites for this weekend will be Adrian Lewis, who ended his 14-month wait for a ranking title with victory over his Target stablemate Dave Chisnall to win Players Championship Five. Lewis also defeated Benito van de Pas and Michael van Gerwen in last-leg deciders en route to the title in Milton Keynes.

Simon Whitlock, Rob Cross and Alan Norris, all of whom have claimed Players Championship glory in 2017, will also be in action across both days, alongside Mervyn King, Peter Jacques and Darren Johnson, who have all reached a Players Championship Final this year.

Five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld is another high-profile star that will be in action this weekend. Van Barneveld reached his third Players Championship quarter-final of the year in Milton Keynes last Sunday, and he’ll be joined by fellow Premier League stars James Wade and Dave Chisnall.

Jelle Klaasen and Kim Huybrechts will also be looking to return to winning ways after suffering Premier League elimination last week. Klaasen is suffering with a tendonitis problem in his wrist, whilst Kim’s mother Gaby very sadly passed away last week, but the Pro Tour presents a fine platform for both players to regain their confidence.

However, besides Van Gerwen and Anderson, there are ten further tour-card holders who are skipping this weekend’s double-header at the Barnsley Metrodome. Phil Taylor’s Pro Tour hiatus continues as he scales down his commitments ahead of his impending retirement, whilst Terry Jenkins also remains absent.

‘The Raging Bull’ vowed to wind down his playing commitments towards the end of last year and simply play in events he’s already qualified in via the rankings. Nevertheless, Jenkins is under serious threat of missing out on the World Matchplay in July, so he may be forced to return to the Pro Tour if he’s to appear at the Winter Gardens.

Three-time world champion John Part will miss this weekend’s double-header having competed in Milton Keynes last week, whilst Simon Stevenson, Ryan Searle, Shaun Griffiths are also absent. Meanwhile, Ross Smith, Kim Viljanen, Dick van Dijk and Ting-Chi Royden Lam are still yet to appear in a Players Championship event in 2017.

With twelve tour-card holders absent this weekend, non-tour card holders Adam Hunt, Bryan de Hoog, Colin Roelofs, Diogo Portela, Haruki Muramatsu, Mick Todd, Peter Jacques, Peter Hudson, Stuart Kellett, Terry Roach, Zoran Lerchbacher and Warrick Scheffer will all be in action.
