Anderson denies Nine-dart Wright in Wigan!

Gary Anderson defeated nine-dart hero Peter Wright to clinch his second Players Championship title of the year at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan on Sunday afternoon. ‘The Flying Scotsman’ defeated his fellow Scot in the final of Players Championship Two last month and replicated the feat in emphatic style.

The world number two performed magnificently throughout the day, dropping just twelve legs en route to scooping the £10,000 winner’s cheque. Despite winning six PDC ranking titles in 2017, Wright was denied a first Players Championship title of the year, as Anderson moves up to second on the Players Championship Order of Merit.

The two-time world champion drew first blood in Sunday’s final, clinching a scrappy opener via D2. He then doubled his lead on tops after Wright missed D16 for a 102 kill, before storming into a 3-0 advantage after converting a stunning 124 outshot (T20, T16, D8).

Wright opened his account after following up his first maximum with a 13-dart hold via D16, but Anderson was unperturbed and continued the procession. The two-time world champion pegged tops for a 13-darter of his own, having fired in a stunning 177, before dispatching a classy 118 finish on the bullseye to move to the brink of victory at 5-1.

Despite this, Snakebite continued to battle and doubled his tally with a brilliant 81 checkout on the bull, before capitalising on a missed match dart from Anderson to reduce the arrears to 5-3. Nevertheless, this wasn’t the start of a heroic fightback, as Ando followed up another maximum with a 13-darter on tops to prevail.

Anderson was dominant throughout the day; dropping just three legs in his opening two matches against Harry Robinson and Mickey Mansell. The world number two then stormed into the last 16, with a whitewash win over a resurgent Paul Nicholson, to set up a fourth-round tie with Michael van Gerwen for the second straight day.

Anderson was beaten 6-4 by the world number one yesterday; despite averaging 110.48. Nevertheless, the Scot gained revenge; averaging 105.07 to topple MvG by the same score-line, before storming into the semi-finals with a whitewash victory over Jonny Clayton, who had defeated James Wilson and Adrian Lewis earlier in the day.

In the last four, the two-time world champion faced Steve West, who defeated Jamie Lewis, John Henderson, John Michael, Robbie Green and Alan Norris to reach the semi-finals. However, Anderson was too strong for the Englishman; averaging 104.22 and landing five maximums to close out a comprehensive 6-2 triumph.

In the bottom half of the draw, second seed Wright kicked off his campaign with successive 6-2 triumphs against Mike De Decker and Jeffrey de Graaf , before recording a hard-fought win over Wayne Jones- to gain revenge for his opening-round defeat to ‘The Wanderer’ three weeks ago.

The world number three then edged out quick-fire Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena, before claiming a deciding-leg victory over former Challenge Tour star Ryan Searle. Searle claimed the scalps of Dimitri van den Bergh, Kim Huybrechts and Christian Kist to reach his first Players Championship quarter-final, before succumbing to Snakebite.

In the last four, Wright faced world number eleven Michael Smith, who returned to form in impressive fashion with victories over Jim Walker, Richard North, Josh Payne, Justin Pipe and Ian White. Nevertheless, Snakebite landed a magnificent nine-dart finish in the sixth leg of the semi-final, en route to securing a fine 6-3 win over ‘Bully-Boy’.

Nevertheless, whilst two of the world’s top three contested the final; a number of other big-name stars were condemned to early exits. Simon Whitlock was dumped out in round-one for the second successive day; losing out to Saturday’s quarter-finalist Jonathan Worsley.

James Wade’s disappointing weekend culminated with a deciding-leg defeat against Ted Evetts in round-one, whilst Players Championship Seven winner Daryl Gurney was beaten at the same stage by an inspired Berry van Peer. The young Dutchman crashed in seven maximums, two 177’s and completed victory with a fabulous 170 checkout.
