Co Stompe handed suspended sentence for tax fraud!

Former World Cup of Darts champion Co Stompe has been handed a three-month suspended sentence after being convicted of defrauding the tax service of more than £100,000 euros.

Stompe and his wife Daniëlle failed to declare their entire income from 2009 to 2013, during which he earned money from competing in darts tournaments, as well as exhibitions and punditry appearances.

The district court in Almelo also determined that the couple were guilty of documentary fraud and deliberately submitting false tax returns. Stompé was ordered to carry out 150 hours’ unpaid work while his wife will undergo 190 hours. The pair were also handed three-month suspended prison sentences.

The couple insisted that there was no deliberate attempt to defraud and claimed the mistakes were the result of Mrs Stompé’s lack of bookkeeping experience. Nevertheless, the court ruled that the couple had both chosen not to get professional advice even though they ‘knew’ the figures were wrong.

The popular Dutchman, nicknamed ‘The Matchstick’, made his last televised appearance at the BDO’s Zuiderduin Masters in December 2014, having re-joined from the PDC. However, his return came with little success and his last competitive appearance on the BDO circuit was back in May 2015.

One of his career highlights came in 2010, when he partnered Raymond van Barneveld to World Cup glory for the Netherlands in the tournament’s inaugural staging. He also reached the PDC World Championship quarter-finals for two successive years in 2009 and 2010, having previously reached the Lakeside semi-finals back in 2000.

More recently, the 54-year-old has been plying his trade as a pundit on RTL7’s darting coverage and he recently hit the headlines after labelling Phil Taylor a ‘backstabber’ in the wake of Taylor’s dramatic World Matchplay quarter-final victory over world number one Michael van Gerwen.
