World number one Michael van Gerwen has revealed his pride at being nominated for the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of The Year award after enjoying an incredible 2017.
‘The Green Machine’ clinched his second World Championship title in January and has secured 19 titles in total. These include the Masters, Premier League, Shanghai Darts Masters, U.S Darts Masters, European Championship, World Series of Darts Finals and Grand Slam of Darts titles.
The Dutchman has claimed six European Tour titles in 2017 which has seen him establish a staggering £1,736,250 in ranking prize money on the PDC Order of Merit. Van Gerwen also helped fire his country to World Cup glory in June, where he was paired alongside five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld.
Van Gerwen has been nominated alongside Tennis legend Roger Federer, American Football star Tom Brady, US Swimmer Katie Ledecky, Para-athlete Tatyana McFadden and Athletics ace Sally Pearson, and he is thrilled to be in such esteemed company.
Van Gerwen admitted: “It is a very nice honour to be nominated for this award. It is fantastic to be recognised in this way and to be named alongside some brilliant sport stars. It makes me feel very proud.”
