Top seed Michael van Gerwen will take on home favourite Max Hopp in the first-round of the German Darts Masters this Friday, when the 2018 World Series season gets underway in Gelsenkirchen.

The first of six World Series events to be hosted across the globe will take place in front of a record-breaking 20,000 crowd at the Veltins Arena, the home of Schalke football club. The venue will be transformed into a “Darts Music Arena” for the one-day spectacle, as 16 players battle it out for the title.

Eight German players will compete in the tournament, alongside recent German Darts Open winner Max Hopp and Martin Schindler- who will team up with ‘The Maximiser’ at next week’s World Cup of Darts in Frankfurt.

However, the match of the opening-round sees world number one Van Gerwen take on former World Youth champion Hopp, who clinched his first PDC senior title at last month’s German Darts Open. Nevertheless, the 21-year-old faces an ominous task, having lost each of his previous four clashes against ‘Mighty Mike’.

Reigning champion Peter Wright faces host-nation representative Dragutin Horvat in a repeat of their first-round contest at last year’s event. The world number two survived match darts as he edged a thriller 6-5 twelve months ago, before going on to lift the title with victory over Phil Taylor in the final.

Martin Schindler will take on World Series debutant Dimitri van den Bergh, with the World Youth champion making his bow on the global stage, whilst world champion Rob Cross also makes his first World Series appearance as he plays Stefan Stoyke.

Two-time world champion Gary Anderson- seeded fourth this weekend, faces Gabriel Clemens in a repeat of last Saturday’s Players Championship Final. Clemens was appearing in his first senior PDC final and led for much of the contest, but ‘The Flying Scotsman’ produced a fine comeback to secure his fifth title of the season.

Five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld will kick off the tournament against Manfred Bilderl, Champions League of Darts holder Mensur Suljovic plays Robert Marijanovic, whilst World Championship semi-finalist Jamie Lewis makes his World Series bow against Nico Kurz.

The first round will be split across two mini-sessions at 3pm and 5.30pm local time, with the quarter-finals kicking off a bumper evening of action from 8pm. The intervals will see music acts on stage at the Veltins Arena to complement the unique World Series of Darts tournament.
