Phil Taylor will return to the Winter Gardens in Blackpool later this month as part of the Sky Sports punditry team for the BetVictor World Matchplay.
‘The Power’ enjoyed unparalleled success at this tournament over the years and secured his 16th World Matchplay title twelve months ago- the final major televised title of his illustrious career spanning three decades.
Taylor went unbeaten for 38 matches at the Matchplay between 2008 and 2015- posting eight of the top ten averages in the competition’s history. Therefore following his retirement in January, the World Matchplay was renamed as ‘The Phil Taylor Trophy’ in his honour, and he will now return to his favourite venue as part of Sky Sports’ team.
The 57-year-old will be working alongside the likes of three-time major finalist Wayne Mardle, three-time world champion John Part and two-time Matchplay champion Rod Harrington in the Sky Sports studio when the tournament takes place between July 21st- 29th.
The Stoke-on-Trent star defeated Peter Wright 18-8 in an emotional finale at this event last year, before retiring from professional competition after finishing as runner-up to Rob Cross in the 2018 World Championship.
The 16-time world champion has competed in soft-tip events across the globe this year whilst still featuring prominently on the exhibition circuit, but now viewers will see Taylor on their television screens for the first time since his retirement over six months ago. One thing’s for sure; it’ll be box office!
