Big names progress in Fantasy World Championship

Phil Taylor, Eric Bristow, Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld all safely navigated their way through to the second round of the Fantasy World Championships, with two-time world champions Jocky Wilson and Ted Hankey arguably the biggest names to fall.

The debate surrounding who is the greatest player of all-time notoriously causes considerable conjecture, so we’ve given you the opportunity to decide. In similar style to the PDC’s Walk-On World Cup competition, the results of the competition are determined purely via social media polls.

The tournament kicked off on Sunday with eight first-round matches taking place, with five-time world champions Raymond van Barneveld and Eric Bristow MBE both sealing their spots in the second round.

The late Bristow received a whopping 92.70% of the votes in his clash against two-time World Matchplay champion Rod Harrington, to set up a last 16 showdown with two-time world champion Gary Anderson, who romped through against his Premier League colleague Rob Cross.

Van Barneveld was dealt a tough opener against the iconic Jocky Wilson but in a battle of the men with seven world titles between them, the doyen of Dutch darts prevailed with 65.9% of the votes, to set up a meeting with Dennis Priestley for a place in the quarter-finals.

‘The Menace’ saw off Bobby George in a clash of the darting stalwarts, as three-time BDO world champion Martin Adams cruised past darts’ original pantomime villain Peter Manley to book a tussle with reigning PDC world champion Peter Wright, who saw off former world number one Colin Lloyd.

The legendary three-time world champion John Lowe was a convincing winner against 2004 BDO world champion Andy Fordham and Lowe’s reward is a tie against Grand Slam champion Gerwyn Price, who edged out Ted Hankey in the tightest contest of the first round.

Monday’s action saw Taylor and Van Gerwen enter the fray and both men were comfortable victors. Taylor eased past Leighton Rees – the first man to be crowned world darts champion, whilst world number one Van Gerwen claimed the scalp of 1983 world champion Keith Deller.

MvG will take on three-time BDO world champion Glen Durrant for a place in the last eight after ‘Duzza’ dazzled with over 80% of the votes against Welsh legend Richie Burnett, whilst Taylor faces Wayne Mardle – who was a popular choice against ten-time women’s world champion Trina Gulliver.

James Wade and John Part will lock horns in the last 16 after seeing off two more female stars. Nine-time major winner Wade accounted for four-time women’s world champion Lisa Ashton, with three-time world champion Part cruising past ‘Queen of the Palace’ Fallon Sherrock.

Elsewhere, Bob Anderson rolled back the years to overcome Australian number one Simon Whitlock in his opener and a second round clash with Adrian Lewis awaits ‘The Limestone Cowboy’, after the Stoke-on-Trent star battled past the evergreen Steve Beaton in a closely-fought encounter.

The last 16 will get underway on Tuesday from 11am, with Sunday’s winners making their return. Monday’s winners will feature on Wednesday and in order to cast your vote, head to @JoshsDartistry where all the polls will be available until voting concludes at 8pm.
