The Fantasy World Darts Championship was blown wide open on Wednesday, as arguably the two greatest players of all-time were dumped out in the last 16 stage.
The debate surrounding people’s favourite dart player of all-time is a constant talking point on social media, so we’ve given you the opportunity to decide. In similar style to the PDC’s Walk-On World Cup competition, the results of the competition are determined purely via social media polls.
Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen, Eric Bristow and Raymond van Barneveld all safely navigated their way through to the second round with comprehensive opening round wins, although ‘The Power’ and MvG fell by the wayside following a series of upsets on Day Four.
Taylor was up against his old foe Wayne Mardle, who claimed the PDC’s inaugural Walk-On World Cup title last week. However, despite the 16-time world champion boasting a dominant record over ‘Hawaii 501’ in their playing days, Mardle’s army of fans saw him prevail.
Over 2,200 fans had their say, although in a repeat of his memorable 2008 World Championship quarter-final success against the Stoke-on-Trent legend, Mardle ran out a narrow winner with 53% of the public vote to progress to the last eight.
However, Taylor wasn’t the only big name casualty, as world number one Michael van Gerwen was dumped out by fellow three-time world champion Glen Durrant. ‘Duzza’ – the current Premier League leader- aided by his social media support, claimed 61% of the votes against ‘Mighty Mike’.
Durrant will take on another three-time world champion for a semi-final spot, after Canadian legend John Part cruised past nine-time major winner James Wade in his last 16 tie. Meanwhile, Mardle will play two-time world champion Adrian Lewis, who battled past the legendary Bob Anderson.
Tuesday’s action saw Bristow and Van Barneveld progress to the last eight, although ‘The Crafty Cockney’ only just overcame two-time world champion Gary Anderson in a titanic tussle, securing 51% of the public’s vote having trailed for much of the contest.
Van Barneveld defeated a two-time world champion for the second consecutive round, following up his opening round success against Jocky Wilson by defeating Dennis Priestley with 65% of the votes and he’ll take on another great of the game in the quarter-finals.
The doyen of Dutch darts will lock horns with three-time world champion John Lowe, who eased past Grand Slam holder Gerwyn Price in the second round. ‘Old Stoneface’ saw off 2004 world champion Andy Fordham in his opener, before adding the Welshman to his list of scalps.
Elsewhere, current PDC world champion Peter Wright breezed through to the quarter-finals with a resounding win over three-time BDO world champion Martin Adams. Only Part was a more convincing winner than ‘Snakebite’ in round two, who now faces Bristow for a semi-final place.
The last eight gets underway from 11am on Thursday, before a one-day break on Friday. The tournament will conclude over the weekend with the semi-finals taking place on Saturday followed by the final on Sunday and to cast your vote, head to @JoshsDartistry where all the polls will be available.
