One of darts’ most iconic rivalries will be resumed on Thursday evening as Phil Taylor and Raymond van Barneveld lock horns in an online soft-tip contest – streamed from their own living rooms!
Taylor and Van Barneveld met 83 times throughout their career and although ‘The Power’ monopolised the pair’s head-to-head record, Barney won their most memorable clash of all time – edging out the Stoke-on-Trent legend in a sudden-death epic in the 2007 PDC World Championship final.
Taylor retired from competitive action following the 2018 World Championship, whilst Barney bowed out from the sport just a matter of months ago, although they’re set to renew their rivalry in a special soft-tip match designed to raise money to support our magnificent NHS.
The two darting legends – with 21 world titles between them – will collide on Target’s Nexus Board, which enables player to compete online via remote locations, and the match will be a best of 13 legs contest with traditional 501 down rules.
Target’s Nexus Boards are proving a particular hit with darts fans amid the coronavirus pandemic and whilst the two juggernauts will be competing from their own living rooms, they’ll still be able to interact with each other via the live camera functionality.
This will be the pair’s first meeting on a soft-tip board and there are some notable differences from the steel-tip game. The size of the trebles are bigger, although bullseye is often the preferred target to the treble 20 as the outer bull also counts as 50 points.
The match will take place from 7pm BST on Thursday and it will be streamed on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube via bookmaker Paddy Power. They’re also pledging to donate £1,000 to charity for every 180 hit, with all proceeds going to the NHS in their fight against coronavirus.
