Martin Adams defeated his old adversary Phil Taylor to secure top spot in the second staging of the MODUS Champions Series on Sunday, ten years ago to the day since the 16-time world champion landed TWO nine-darters on one of the most incredible nights in the sport’s history.
‘The Power’ became the first man in darting history to achieve perfection twice in one match during his victory over Wade in the 2010 Premier League final, and he marked that poignant anniversary with another online appearance.
The 59-year-old rolled back the years to claim the spoils a fortnight ago – averaging almost 111 in defeating Adams whilst also seeing off ‘Queen of the Palace’ Fallon Sherrock and three-time women’s world champion Anastasia Dobromyslova to triumph in the inaugural staging.
Adams, Taylor and Sherrock returned for a second appearance and they were joined by former World Youth champion Arron Monk, who has impressed throughout MODUS’ live leagues – landing a nine-dart finish of his own just weeks ago.
Adams and Monk kicked off proceedings and the three-time BDO world champion ran out an emphatic 5-1 winner, converting finishes of 116 and 115 in the opening two legs – averaging 98 and crashing in three maximums in the process.
‘Wolfie’ returned moments later to take on Sherrock, who finished with tremendous poise in the early stages to establish a 3-0 cushion. Adams fought back to force a decider but it was to no avail, as the 25-year-old produced a sublime 130 checkout on the bull for a 12-dart clincher.
Taylor then began his bid for top spot against Monk, who produced an exhibition 110 checkout (S20, D20, Bull) to avoid another 5-1 drubbing. The 30-year-old rallied to force a last-leg shootout, only to squander two darts for an improbable victory in a contest played in terrific spirit.
However, Monk did avoid a third consecutive loss when he locked horns with Sherrock in his final clash of the afternoon. The Milton Keynes ace led 2-1 following a tentative start, but her scoring power suddenly evaded her as Monk reeled off the final four legs without reply to wrap up the win.
Two legends of the sport locked horns in the penultimate tie, with Taylor taking on Adams. The pair contested an epic a fortnight ago, yet the latest instalment saw ‘Wolfie’ run out a comfortable 5-2 winner in a scrappy affair – as ‘The Power’ averaged 81 and hit just 20% of his attempts at double.
The BDO stalwart was guaranteed top spot by virtue of legs difference which left Taylor and Sherrock battling for second spot in the afternoon’s finale, although the Stoke-on-Trent veteran secured that particular honour.
Sherrock produced statistically her best display of the afternoon, averaging almost 93 and taking out 72, 78 and 116 finishes, but Taylor was up to the task – averaging 99.23, piling in two maximums and boasting an impressive 71% doubling success rate to register his second win of the afternoon.
