Martin Adams rolled back the years on the eve of his 64th birthday to land a spectacular nine-dart finish in Modus’ Icons of Darts live league on Wednesday afternoon.
The three-time BDO world champion achieved perfection in the final leg of his 5-1 success against former World Youth champion James Hubbard, following up back-to-back maximums with a delightful 141 checkout to complete his victory in sublime style.
It’s the second nine-dart leg landed since the inception of the MODUS live league, after 2011 World Youth champion Arron Monk landed the first of the tournament in April, with Hubbard also the victim on that occasion.
It capped off another impressive day’s work for ‘Wolfie’, who has been in magnificent form during the lockdown period. Adams scooped two titles last week, only to be denied a hat-trick of triumphs by Russian World Cup captain Boris Koltsov.
The 63-year-old was also edged out by Scott Marsh on legs difference in Monday’s league despite registering four wins from five, the highlight of which included a 111 average in a stunning win over Fallon Sherrock.
The BDO stalwart kicked off Wednesday’s proceedings against Sherrock and he was forced to defy a spirited comeback from ‘The Queen of the Palace’ who recovered from 4-1 down to force a decider, only for Adams to fire in a maximum to close out victory.
Adams then renewed his rivalry with Monday’s table-topper Marsh and he gained retribution for his defeat less than 48 hours earlier, averaging 96.44 and boasting a 50% checkout success rate on the outer ring to establish early control of the table.
‘Wolfie’ maintained his 100% record after surviving a match dart from former Players Championship Finals winner Paul Nicholson in his third clash of the afternoon, which was swiftly followed by his nine-dart heroics in an emphatic victory over Hubbard.
However, the former World Master suffered a narrow 5-4 reversal against David Evans in his fifth and final fixture of the day – spurning two match darts, before the BDO World Championship quarter-finalist recovered from 4-2 down to claim the points.
Evans subsequently went on to clinch Wednesday’s title, claiming maximum points from his five fixtures and confirming top spot with successive 5-1 wins over Hubbard and Nicholson.
Adams will return to action in Phase Three of Modus’ Icons of Darts live league on Friday, whilst former Lakeside world champions Scott Mitchell, Mark Webster and Russian World Cup star Koltsov headline Thursday’s line-up.
