Martin Adams continued his blistering form to secure a second Modus Icons of Darts title in the space of three days, edging out Brazilian star Diogo Portela and Russia’s Boris Koltsov to claim top spot.
The three-time BDO world champion stormed to Monday’s title with five consecutive wins, dropping just eight legs in the process. He kicked off Wednesday’s campaign with defeat against Portela, only to recover with four successive wins to deny the Samba star the daily title.
The 64-year-old appeared poised to begin Wednesday’s action with victory over the Brazilian as he cruised into an early 3-0 lead. However, Portela produced a remarkable rally – firing in four maximums and landing a brace of 170 checkouts to triumph 5-3.
Adams turned the tables in his next clash, reeling off five straight legs from 2-0 down to defeat Spain’s Jose Justicia – averaging 104.97, converting two 121 finishes and boasting an impressive 63% checkout success rate on the outer ring.
‘Wolfie’ continued his bid for top spot with comprehensive victories over the struggling duo of Jarred Cole and Mark Dudbridge. Adams took out finishes of 126 and 136 en route to a 5-1 win over Cole, before averaging 95 in a ruthless whitewash against former world finalist ‘Flash’.
Portela finished his campaign on eight points, but a succession of wins for the mercurial Koltsov set up a winner-takes-all showdown against Adams in the afternoon’s finale, with Portela unable to seal the spoils due to his inferior legs difference.
Adams and Koltsov have contested a series of thrilling battles throughout the Modus Icons of Darts live leagues although on this occasion, experience won the day as Adams ran out a 5-3 winner by virtue of another ton-plus average.
Adams monopolised the scoring stakes and despite a classy 104 checkout from Koltsov in leg six, a brace of 13-darters from Adams helped him to victory with a 103.17 average, four maximums and a superb 71% doubling success rate.
The three-time World Master has rolled back the years over recent weeks, landing a spectacular nine-darter and scooping two titles over the last seven days. The BDO stalwart was denied a weekly hat-trick by Koltsov last week, but he’ll be aiming to make amends when he returns to action on Friday.
