Keane Barry and David Evans claimed titles as the PDC Unicorn Challenge Tour returned in Barnsley, whilst Fallon Sherrock also impressed as she posted a mammoth average en route to reaching the quarter-finals of Friday’s opening event.
The Challenge Tour – the PDC’s second-tier tour – returned for the first time since January with two events at the Barnsley Metrodome – with six scheduled to take place in total across the weekend.
The day began with 18-year-old Irish sensation Keane Barry wrapping up Event Five glory with victory over young Dutchman Maikel Verberk. Barry is assured of a Tour Card for the 2021 campaign via the Development Tour and he reaffirmed his credentials with a series of impressive displays.
Last year’s BDO World Youth champion defeated former Tour Card holders Chris Quantock and Matthew Dennant en route to reaching the final, where he edged out 21-year-old Verberk in a dramatic last-leg decider.
However, Sherrock stole the show in the early stages of the tournament, posting a sensational 110.30 average in her second round victory over Perry Davenport, before producing clinical displays to defeat David Evans 5-0 (98.90) and Wes Newton 5-2 (96.50).
‘The Queen of the Palace’ also overcame talented Welshman Lewy Williams, who posted a remarkable 117.10 average to defeat his compatriot Richie Burnett in the previous round, before her title bid was curtailed by Dennant in the quarter-finals.
The second title of the day was claimed by Evans, who defeated former Lakeside champion Richie Burnett in the final of Event Six to scoop the £2,000 top prize. Evans impressed throughout lockdown in the thriving online concept and he transferred that form to the Barnsley Metrodome.
‘Stretch’ posted three consecutive ton-plus averages to topple James Richardson, Eddie Lovely and Scott Mitchell, before defeating Burnett in another last-leg shootout. The second day of the Challenge Tour treble-header continues today, with Events Seven and Eight taking place currently.
