Phil Taylor will begin his bid for World Seniors Matchplay glory against either Trina Gulliver MBE or Deta Hedman, after the draw for July’s inaugural staging was confirmed earlier this week.
‘The Power’ headlines a star-studded 20-player field at the Bonus Arena in Hull from July 1-3, and the Stoke-on-Trent veteran will face one of the greats of the women’s game in his opener.
Taylor enjoyed extraordinary success in the PDC’s World Matchplay at the iconic Winter Gardens, lifting the title on 16 occasions, including an astonishing 38-game unbeaten run in Blackpool from 2008-2015.
Gulliver and Hedman’s showdown is one of four first-round tussles taking place in Hull, with former World Matchplay champion Peter Evison pitted against either 1983 world champion Keith Deller or the World Seniors Order of Merit leader.
Elsewhere, four-time women’s world champion Lisa Ashton and three-time world finalist Tony O’Shea will face qualifiers in their opening games, with 1994 World Matchplay champion Larry Butler and World Seniors Championship winner Robert Thornton awaiting the respective winners in round two.
Three-time world champion John Part and Peter Manley lock horns in round two, with both players having featured in World Matchplay finals, and the winner will take on the legendary John Lowe MBE or Kevin Painter – a semi-finalist at the World Seniors Championship in February.
Three-time BDO world champion Martin Adams plays 1988 world champion Bob Anderson in round two, with nine-time major finalist Terry Jenkins or 1998 World Matchplay runner-up Ronnie Baxter awaiting the victor in the quarter-finals.
