Players Championship 1 & 2 Entries!

The entries have been confirmed for the year’s first two Players Championship events which will take place at the Barnsley Metrodome on Saturday 25th February and Sunday 26th February.

The 128-player tournaments will see PDC Tour Card Holders and PDPA Associate Members competing across the weekend, featuring 32 top seeds from the Pro Tour Order of Merit. There will be live coverage from two streaming boards across both days, with all games being the best of eleven legs.

The most high-profile absentee from next weekend’s action will be world champion Michael van Gerwen. The world number one suggested earlier this year that he would scale down his Pro Tour commitments due to the forthcoming birth of his first child with his wife Daphne.

Phil Taylor and Terry Jenkins will also not feature at the Barnsley Metrodome, although this is of no surprise. Taylor will no longer compete on the Pro Tour ahead of his planned retirement in January 2018, whilst Jenkins himself has claimed that he is ‘semi-retired’, and will focus solely on major TV tournaments that he has already qualified for. World Series of Darts Finals: Qualifiers Confirmed!

Steve Beaton.jpg

Simon Whitlock and Steve Beaton were among the four stars to qualify for next month’s Ladbrokes World Series of Darts Finals after coming through qualifiers held at the Barnsley Metrodome on Sunday. Brendan Dolan secured a magnificent qualification-double, whilst Joe Murnan showed his class to seal his spot in Glasgow.

Simon Whitlock continued his fine run of form to secure qualification for the World Series of Darts Finals. Whitlock competed in the Sydney Darts Masters and Perth Darts Masters earlier this year, but lost in the opening round on both occasions, to Peter Wright and Raymond van Barneveld respectively.

The Aussie ace, who has recorded two Players Championship victories within the last month, breezed through to the final round of qualifying, before prevailing in an extremely tight tussle to confirm his place at the Braehead Arena next month.

‘The Wizard’ recorded comprehensive wins against Dick van Dijk and Shaun Griffiths, before thrashing Nigel Heydon 6-1 to reach the last eight. Whitlock had dropped just four legs in his opening three games, but his decisive contest with William O’Connor was a nail-biting affair, which saw the Aussie claim the spoils in a last-leg shootout. Nine-dart Whitlock wins second straight Players Championship title!

Whitlock Barnsley.jpg

Simon Whitlock fired in a 9-darter en route to winning his second successive Players Championship crown after beating young star Chris Dobey 6-4 in the final at the Barnsley Metrodome on Friday afternoon. ‘The Wizard’ landed the 9-darter in his first-round demolition of Par Riihonen, before going on to scoop the £10,000 winner’s cheque.

Whitlock kicked off Friday’s final with a clinical 109 checkout, before doubling his lead after following up his first maximum by pinning D4. Dobey opened his account with a 90 checkout, although the former European Champion regained his two-leg lead after converting a crucial 64 finish.

Dobey profited from Whitlock’s profligacy in the fifth leg as he reduced the arrears to 3-2, but the next three legs went with throw as the Australian moved to the brink of victory. Dobey preserved his hopes by taking out D4 in the ninth leg, but he was unable to deny ‘The Wizard’, who held throw in leg ten to clinch his 13th PDC Pro Tour triumph.

Whitlock kicked off the day in sublime fashion, whitewashing Par Riihonen and firing in the 9th perfect leg of his PDC career. The Australian followed this up with an emphatic 6-2 win against former World Youth finalist Nathan Aspinall, before producing a stunning display to whitewash former major finalist Mervyn King.

Whitlock faced eight-time major finalist James Wade in round-three, with ‘The Machine’ having dropped just four legs in his three matches. However, the Aussie ace prevailed, winning 6-3 to set up a quarter-final clash with Jamie Lewis. Continue reading “Nine-dart Whitlock wins second straight Players Championship title!”

Michael van Gerwen claimed victory in the first streamed Players Championship event in PDC history, whitewashing the in-form Mensur Suljovic 6-0 in the final at the Barnsley Metrodome on Tuesday afternoon.

Van Gerwen was in magnificent form throughout the day; dropping just 13 legs in his seven matches. However, he saved his best for the final, where he fired in three maximums to dismantle Suljovic, who was appearing in his first ever Players Championship final- his third Pro Tour final this month.

Van Gerwen clinched a scrappy opening leg on D2, after Suljovic had spurned a dart at D18 to break throw. ‘The Green Machine’ then fired in his first maximum en route to breaking Suljovic’s throw in 13-darts.

The Austrian posted his first maximum as he attempted to register an instant break back, but MvG fired in another 180, before pinning D8 to establish a commanding 3-0 cushion. The Dutchman was growing in confidence and posted visits of 123, 134 and 134 in leg four, before converting 110 for a majestic 12-darter and a second break of throw.

Suljovic was desperate to avoid a whitewash and he gave himself an opportunity to break back after firing in a timely score of 170. However, ‘The Gentle’ spurned two darts at D16 and Van Gerwen nailed tops to complete a 16-dart hold of throw. Continue reading “MvG whitewashes Suljovic on historic day at Players Championship 14!”
