Newly crowned world champion Michael van Gerwen will begin the defence of his Betway Premier League title against two-time world champion Gary Anderson, a rematch of their recent World Championship final, when the competition gets underway at the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle on Thursday February 2nd.

The opening nine weeks see the players meet once in the league phase, before the bottom two players are eliminated following Judgement Night in Cardiff.

The remaining eight players then face each other again in the remaining six league nights in April and May, before the top four players progress to compete in the Play-Offs at The O2 in London on Thursday May 18.

Van Gerwen defeated Anderson 7-3 to win his second world title a fortnight ago, halting Anderson’s incredible seventeen match winning streak at the Alexandra Palace. Michael van Gerwen and Dave Chisnall played out a pulsating draw in the final match of the Premier League phase in Brighton, meaning van Gerwen has now finished top in the last three years of the Premier League. The 25-year old will now meet his compatriot Raymond van Barneveld in a repeat of last year’s final, which van Barneveld won 10-6.

The 5-time World Champion ended his league campaign in fine style, beating Stephen Bunting 7-4 with an 102 average. The other semi-final will be contested between Chisnall and World Champion Gary Anderson, who clinched top spot with a comprehensive 7-3 triumph over a slightly erratic Adrian Lewis.

Premier League Darts- Week 15 Preview

As we head into the final week of group phase action in this year’s Premier League Darts, the Top 4 places have been decided following last week’s results. Michael van Gerwen, Dave Chisnall, Raymond van Barneveld and Gary Anderson will all be present at the O2, vying for the coveted Premier League crown. However, van Gerwen and Chisnall are battling for 1st place, whilst Anderson and van Barneveld are still fighting for 3rd spot, so this week’s fixtures still have real significance.

Notably, this is the first time in 11 years of the competition’s history that Taylor has failed to qualify for the Top 4; in fact, he’s never finished lower than 3rd in the league phase previously. Despite this, it would be rather naïve and dismissive to claim this is indicative of Taylor’s imminent decline.
