Anderson ruled out of Premier League opener through illness

World Champion and defending Premier League champion Gary Anderson has been ruled out of the opening week of the 2016 Premier League campaign due to illness, meaning his protégé Michael Smith will play twice, at the First Direct Arena in Leeds.

Anderson was due to take on Lewis in a repeat of their World Championship final clash last month, however he was taken unwell on Wednesday and after receiving medical consultation, he has been diagnosed as displaying symptoms of having a viral upper respiratory tract infection, and is therefore unable to compete tonight.

In a statement released by the PDC, the Scot said: “I’m desperately disappointed that I can’t play in Leeds this evening, but the truth is that I feel absolutely terrible and I would not have been able to get on stage.”
