2017 PDC World Championship Day Four: Evening Report!

Phil Taylor.jpg

Phil Taylor produced a mightily impressive performance to begin his assault for a 17th World Championship crown in style, as Alan Norris and Daryl Gurney also secured victories on a dramatic day four at the Alexandra Palace on Sunday evening.

Taylor dropped just two legs in beating DPA qualifier David Platt to set up a second-round clash with Kevin Painter, in a repeat of their iconic 2004 World Championship Final. Taylor was very impressive; averaging 101.93, hitting three maximums and converting 50% of his double attempts to kick off his campaign in fine fashion.

Earlier in the night, Platt had sealed his showdown with Taylor after securing an impressive straight sets triumph over John Bowles. Platt averaged 86.92, converted 43% of his double attempts and landed a stunning 156 checkout to seal victory against the PDPA qualifier.

However, he was left feeding off scraps against ‘The Power’. Taylor made a strong start to the contest, clinching the opening two legs in 15 and 14 darts respectively. The fourth seed then spurned two opportunities at double to clinch the set without reply, but Platt failed to take advantage and Taylor returned to pin D10 and seal the opener. World Championship PDPA Qualifier- Report & Results!

Mark Frost, Kevin Simm, Simon Stevenson and John Bowles secured qualification for next month’s World Championships at the Alexandra Palace after progressing through the PDPA World Championship qualifier at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan on Monday afternoon.

There were four spots available to the 120 participants in this year’s qualifier, after the already qualified Corey Cadby triumphed in last night’s World-Youth final. The winner was guaranteed a place in the first-round of next month’s event, whilst the remaining three players will be left to battle it out in the preliminary rounds.

Mark Frost was the first player to secure his qualification for the World Championships. The St Helen’s star cruised through to round-three with successive 5-1 victories over Adam Hunt & Brett Claydon respectively. ‘Frosty’ then saw off Peter Hudson 5-3, before dumping out former World-Youth champion Keegan Brown in a nail-biting decider.

Frost faced Ritchie Edhouse at the decisive quarter-final stage, after Edhouse caused a minor shock by beating Andy Jenkins. However, Frost held his nerve to secure a precious 5-3 victory to reach the semi-finals, guaranteeing his qualification to his first ever PDC World Championship. Q-School Day 1- Nine-Dart drama, as Bowles, Stevenson, Parsons and Williams secure tour cards!

John Bowles

John Bowles, Simon Stevenson, Andy Parsons and Ricky Williams were the four players to secure PDC tour cards on the opening day of 2016 Q-School, whilst Ross Smith also recorded a nine-darter, at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan.

Bowles was the most high-profile player to secure a tour-card on the opening day. The former rugby-league star, who came through Q-School in 2012, dropped just five legs in his opening three games, as he eased past the trio of Justin Broton, Fabian Herz and Colin Fowler.

He recorded an emphatic 5-1 victory over Harry Robinson in the last 32, before defeating Dick van Dijk 5-3 to set up a decisive clash against former Lakeside semi-finalist Brian Woods. Woods, who thrashed Steve Hine 5-1 in the last 16, couldn’t replicate this success against Bowles, with the Widnes star prevailing by a 5-2 scoreline to reclaim his card.
