Michael van Gerwen created history at Coral UK Open qualifier four on Friday afternoon; becoming only the second player in darting history to register two nine-dart finishes in the same game.

The world champion achieved the remarkable feat during his third-round win over Ryan Murray, before going on to defeat Gary Anderson in the final to clinch his first Pro Tour title of the season at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan this evening.

Van Gerwen hit his first nine-darter in the fourth leg of the contest against Murray, hitting scores of 180 and 177 before converting a 144 kill. He then repeated the feat in the eighth leg to seal a 6-2 triumph; registering visits of 177 and 180 before taking out 144 once more to record his second nine-darter within the space of four legs.

‘The Green Machine’ becomes only the second player in the history of professional darts to achieve this stunning feat, following in the footsteps of Phil Taylor. The 16-time world champion recorded two nine-dart finishes in the 2010 Premier League final, where he edged out James Wade in a titanic tussle. 2017 PDC World Championship: Day Ten Report!

MvG.jpg

Michael van Gerwen survived a massive scare against inspired Spaniard Cristo Reyes, as Raymond van Barneveld and Phil Taylor breezed through to the third-round of the World Championship with emphatic whitewash victories on day ten at the Alexandra Palace on Tuesday evening.

Van Gerwen saw off the challenge of an inspired Cristo Reyes to prevail in an absolutely sensational second-round clash. Van Gerwen averaged 105.24, hit 23 140’s, eleven maximums and converted 38% of his double attempts, as Reyes averaged 106.07; the highest losing average in the history of the World Championship.

‘Mighty Mike’ strolled to the first set without dropping a leg. The world number one opened his account on D7, before punishing a mediocre leg from the Spaniard to break throw. Reyes was yet to settle and ‘The Green Machine’ went for the kill; posting a 174 and converting an 11-dart leg on tops to secure the opener.

Nevertheless, Reyes launched a remarkable recovery to level up proceedings. Cristo won his first leg with a magnificent  10-darter on D18, before he hit the same double to complete a 73 outshot after MvG had missed three darts to hold. Reyes was brimming with confidence at this point, and rounded off the set with a confident 14-dart kill. Continue reading “2017 PDC World Championship: Day Ten Report!”

2017 PDC World Championship- Day One Report!

Gary Anderson.jpg

Gary Anderson began his world title defence with an emphatic straight sets victory as Michael Smith, Kevin Painter and Jamie Lewis also tasted victory on the opening night of the 2017 PDC World Championships at the Alexandra Palace on Thursday evening.

Anderson began his title defence with a routine whitewash triumph against debutant Mark Frost. ‘The Flying Scotsman’ averaged 96.16, landed five maximums and converted 38% of his double attempts to record an emphatic victory over the PDPA qualifier, who entertained the Ally Pally crowd despite averaging a miserly 74.

Anderson clinched the first set without reply despite averaging a modest 79. He wired the bullseye for a majestic 170 finish in the first leg before eventually cleaning up on D4. The Scot hit the same target to extend his cushion after ‘Frosty’ missed three darts to break, before the world champion eventually hit D1 to secure a scrappy opener.

‘The Flying Scotsman’ kicked off the second set with his first maximum before pinning tops for a 13-darter and his fourth successive leg. Frost was floundering and Anderson clinically converted a 116 finish on tops to continue the procession, before registering back-to-back maximums and pinning D10 for a 12-darter and a two-set lead. PDPA World Championship Qualifier- Entries Confirmed!

Kevin Painter.jpg

Former World Championship finalists Kevin Painter & Andy Hamilton head the list of entrants for Monday’s William Hill World Darts Championship PDPA qualifier, which takes place at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan.

Painter has appeared in 15 consecutive World Championships since switching to the PDC from the BDO back in 2001, although ‘The Artist’ is in real danger of missing out on this year’s event after falling outside the world’s top 32.

Painter featured in the 2005 World Championship Final at the Circus Tavern when he was beaten 7-6 by Phil Taylor in a captivating tussle, but after slipping to 44th on the PDC Order of Merit, the former Players Championship Finals winner faces an uphill task to qualify for this year’s event.

Another high-profile name set to miss the cut is 2012 World Championship finalist Andy Hamilton. ‘The Hammer’ was beaten by his fellow Stoke star Adrian Lewis at the Alexandra Palace almost five years ago but has endured a miserable slump over the past two years, which has seen him plummet to 40th in the world.
