The fixtures for the last six weeks of Premier League action have been confirmed, as the remaining eight players fight it out to secure a coveted play-off spot. Jelle Klaasen and Kim Huybrechts were both eliminated after nine weeks, therefore the top eight will now compete across six further nights in a bid to secure a spot at the O2 Arena in May.
Robert Thornton climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone after enjoying a fantastic night at Liverpool’s Echo Arena on Thursday evening. The Scot appeared to be a relegation certainty prior to tonight’s action, but he secured three points from his double-header to climb out of the elimination places.
‘The Thorn’ had just one point when he arrived in Merseyside, but he claimed his first victory of the season with a narrow win over Michael Smith, before earning a precious point against Michael van Gerwen in the evening’s curtain raiser.
Thornton kicked off the evening’s proceedings with a hard-fought win against Smith, who is now staring down the barrel of relegation. Thornton led 5-2 at one stage, before ‘Bully-Boy’ launched an admirable fightback, drawing level at 5-5, before the Scot upped the ante to win the final two legs.
It was an attritional battle, as expected given the repercussions of a defeat for either player. However, Thornton’s finishing was the decisive factor. He hit fine shots of 78 and 112 in crucial junctures of the contest, as Smith was punished once again for profligate finishing.
Robert Thornton faces a make or break night at the Echo Arena on Thursday night, as the Scot fights to preserve his Premier League status in Week Eight of the Betway Premier League in Liverpool.
The World Grand-Prix champion has just a solitary point from his six games thus far and he faces a double-header against Michael Smith and Michael van Gerwen respectively on Merseyside. Defeats in both games would confirm Thornton’s relegation, so the stakes could not be higher.
Gary Anderson faces Dave Chisnall in a repeat of last year’s semi-final, but Chizzy is in serious relegation trouble having secured just one draw from his last six fixtures. Elsewhere, Phil Taylor faces Peter Wright, whilst two world champions collide, as Adrian Lewis takes on Raymond van Barneveld.
Michael van Gerwen is hoping to maintain his blistering form in 2015 as he takes on World Champion Gary Anderson at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.
