2017 BDO World Championship Day Seven: Afternoon Report!

Martin Adams.jpg

Jamie Hughes and Darryl Fitton advanced to the World Championship semi-finals after thrilling deciding set victories against Martin Adams and Geert de Vos respectively, as Lisa Ashton stormed into the women’s final in a pulsating session of darts at the Lakeside Country Club on Friday afternoon.

Fourth seed Jamie Hughes came from 2-0 and 3-1 down to edge out three-time world champion Martin Adams in a thrilling nine-set tussle. Adams made a blistering start to the match, but his doubling let him down in the latter stages of the contest, as Hughes prevailed with a 91.89 average, eight maximums and 50% on the doubles.

After a turbulent year, due to his health issues, ‘Wolfie’ performed magnificently throughout the tournament and it was fantastic to see him enjoying his darts and performing so well. He fired in nine maximums and averaged 92.55, but it wasn’t enough for him to secure a spot in his eleventh World Championship semi-final.

The first set was a real high-quality affair. Adams started superbly and posted successive 15-darters after converting checkouts of 72 and 97 respectively. Hughes opened his account after landing his first maximum and rounding off a 12-dart hold, but ‘Wolfie’ wrapped up the opening set with a clinical two-dart 68 outshot. Martin Adams stormed into the World Championship quarter-finals with an emphatic 4-1 victory over 2016 finalist Jeff Smith, as former BDO World Trophy winner Geert de Vos dumped out second seed Scott Mitchell to reach the last eight for the first time, in a cracking session of darts at the Lakeside Country Club on Wednesday afternoon.

Three-time world champion Adams secured his place in this year’s quarter-finals with an impressive 4-1 victory over last year’s finalist Jeff Smith. ‘The Silencer’ defeated Adams in straight sets in the opening round twelve months ago, but ‘Wolfie’ gained retribution for that defeat, averaging 89.94 and landing seven maximums to prevail emphatically.

Adams was averaging in excess of 97 for the vast majority of the contest, but his average dipped as a consequence of a scrappy fifth set. Smith recorded some clinical finishes but he simply couldn’t match Wolfie’s relentless scoring power, as the Canadian’s hopes of replicating last year’s run to the final were quashed at the last 16 stage.

Adams made a strong start to clinch the opening set convincingly. The pair exchanged 17-dart holds to kick off proceedings, before ‘Wolfie’ completed a regulation 57 checkout for the third successive hold. The 60-year-old was dominating the scoring stakes, and landed two maximums in the fourth leg to secure the set with a fabulous 11-darter. Adams 2017.jpg

Three-time world champion Martin Adams edged out debutant Ryan Joyce in a thrilling sudden-death leg, as Scott Mitchell, Paul Hogan and Lisa Ashton all recorded emphatic straight sets victories at the Lakeside Country Club on Sunday afternoon.

Lakeside legend Martin Adams prevailed in a sudden-death classic against debutant Ryan Joyce in the match of the tournament thus far on Sunday afternoon. ‘Wolfie’, appearing in his 24th BDO World Championship, averaged 91.74, landed five maximums and took out four ton-plus checkouts as he survived a match dart to triumph in an epic.

Adams drew first blood with a 15-dart hold on D5, but Joyce levelled after following up his first maximum by dispatching a 100 finish on D10. The man nicknamed ‘Relentless’ then pegged D11 to break after the fifth seed missed four darts to hold, before defying Adams’ first maximum to wrap up the opening set with a clinical two-dart 74 kill.

However, ‘Wolfie’ responded strongly in set two, landing his second maximum and taking out a quality two-dart 86 finish to break. The 60-year-old cemented this with a comfortable hold on tops, before spurning five set darts. Nevertheless, he rectified this error with a classy 118 checkout in the following leg to restore parity at one-apiece. Continue reading “2017 BDO World Championship: Day Two Afternoon Report!”

Finder Darts Masters- Finals Day Report!

Finder Darts Masters.jpg

BDO world number one Glen Durrant regained his Finder Darts Masters title with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over former winner Jamie Hughes, as three-time world champion Anastasia Dobromyslova edged out home favourite Aileen de Graaf to claim glory in the Ladies event at the Hotel Zuiderduin on Sunday afternoon.

Durrant was in imperious form throughout finals day and controlled the match against ‘Yozza’, who battled resiliently and took out some crucial finishes to remain in contention. However, Glen monopolised the final in the scoring department; posting ten maximums and averaging 97.33, compared to Hughes’ 89.53.

Durrant opened up proceedings with a 19-dart hold, before doubling his lead with a clinical 111 finish. Hughes was struggling for consistency and the world number one rounded off a first set whitewash with a solid 16-darter culminating on tops.

Durrant levelled up proceedings with a 15-darter, before Hughes regained the initiative in the set with a stunning 157 outshot. ‘Duzza’ forced a fifth and decisive leg in the set after following up a maximum with a 63 kill, but ‘Yozza’ held his nerve, restoring parity at one set apiece with a 14-dart hold after the pair had traded maximums. Winmau World Masters Day One Report!

Glen Durrant.jpg

Reigning champion Glen Durrant began his Winmau World Masters defence with a comprehensive straight-sets victory, as Martin Adams and Danny Noppert suffered surprise first-round exits at the Lakeside Country Club on Friday afternoon.

Glen Durrant began the defence of his Winmau World Masters title with a comprehensive straight sets victory over Maltese qualifier Norbert Attard. ‘Duzza’ wasn’t at his vintage best; averaging just 87.78. However, he was always in control and sealed his progression to the last 16 with a clinical 133 checkout.

Irish qualifier John O’Shea dumped out three-time champion Martin Adams in an extremely topsy-turvy first-round contest. All five sets went against throw, as Adams was punished for converting just four of his nineteen attempts at double, allowing O’Shea to progress with a modest 80.58 average.

Another shock saw Canadian qualifier Kiley Edmunds knock out world number three Danny Noppert in a thrilling five-setter. Noppert fired in five maximums but was profligate in the finishing department, hitting just 25% of his double attempts. Edmunds took full advantage, averaging 89.90 to record a brilliant 3-2 triumph.
